Jose Mourinho sprang one of the biggest surprises of his Manchester United tenure this afternoon by naming Marouane Fellaini as captain for the Premier League clash against Sunderland. Many United fans on social media expressed their disbelief with the news - Fellaini has never been the most popular figure among the Old Trafford faithful - and it did look a little odd seeing the Belgian lead out the Red Devils at the Stadium of Light. Was this Mourinho’s own cheeky tribute to Sunderland boss David Moyes, the man who brought Fellaini to United from Everton in the summer of 2013?In fairness to Fellaini, who always gives 100 per cent for United every time he pulls on the famous red shirt, he is the longest-serving player in the Red Devils’ line-up today.

But surely the vastly-experienced and talismanic Zlatan Ibrahimovic would have been a better choice for the armband?

Redknapp's reaction to hearing the news was hilarious

Jamie Redknapp, working for Sky Sports, produced a hilarious reaction after hearing that Fellaini was United’s captain for the day.

“You think of the great leaders [Manchester United] have had, would you put him up there,” Sky Sports presenter Dave Jones asked Redknapp.

“No,” the former Liverpool midfielder replied, bluntly. “No, I wouldn’t.”

He then added: “You’re joking? He’s captain. Okay.

“I think they probably haven’t got the leaders that Jose wants, that’s why he’s gone with him as captain.”

That he was standing next to Phil Neville, a member of Moyes’ coaching staff during the Scot’s ill-fated tenure at Old Trafford during the 2013-14 campaign, made it even more awkward.
