Much like every other edition of the franchise, when FIFA 17 was released last September, the top five ratings were dominated by attacking players.

Cristiano Ronaldo beat Lionel Messi (93) to top spot with a rating of 94, while Neymar and Luis Suarez were third and fourth highest on 92.

Bayern Munich's Manuel Neuer came fifth, also with a 92 rating, but the top five once again showed how hard it is for goalkeepers, defenders and midfielders to make the grade.

Goalkeepers and defenders have particularly struggled to break into the top five in recent years, despite how Neuer has featured for the past three editions.

Indeed, since records began on FIFA 05, only one defender has ever been given a high enough rating to be in the top five: Alessandro Nesta on FIFA 07.

The AC Milan legend was ranked fifth on 91 almost a decade ago, behind Wayne Rooney (92), Gianluigi Buffon (92), Ronaldinho (91) and Gregory Coupet (91).

However, once upon a time, the top five on FIFA wasn't always such a one-way street.

Whereas Messi and Ronaldo have placed first or second on every FIFA edition since 11, the top five used to change yearly.

And no game epitomised that notion more than FIFA 06.

Quite incredibly, no less than three goalkeepers were ranked in the top five when FIFA 06 was released in September 2005.

Ronaldinho inevitably claimed top spot with a 95 rating, but thereafter, Gianluigi Buffon (95), Iker Casillas (95) and Petr Cech (94) finished second, third and fourth respectively.

Adriano completed the list with a 94 rating, but the fact three goalkeepers were in the top five just went to show how high the standard was back then.

In the years since, two goalkeepers have been included in the top five on three occasions: FIFA 07, FIFA 09 and FIFA 10.

It's unlikely that feat will ever happen again, but with the likes of David de Gea, Thibaut Courtois and Gianluigi Donnarumma forever improving, anything is possible.
