There was a time when Giuseppe Rossi was set to be a genuine top class striker in the game. Though the American-born Italian international never quite made the grade at Manchester United, he proved himself to be capable of finding the net with a number of big European sides since leaving.Three years at Old Trafford didn't yield much on the pitch, but his education under the guidance of Sir Alex Ferguson proved invaluable as he made a name for himself with the likes of Parma, Villarreal and Fiorentina. However, despite his prowess in front of goal, he frequently proved that he was susceptible to a serious injury or two, suffering three major knee injuries over the course of a career that promised so much, but failed to deliver the real goods. And now, at the age of 30, reports from Spain have confirmed that he has suffered a fourth, and he could now miss the next seven months with another ACL tear. The Celta Vigo forward has scored a total of six goals in 27 appearances this season, and is partnering former Liverpool man Iago Aspas up front. But the club took to their official Twitter account to confirm that he won't be playing any further part in the current campaign. As Celta played out a 2-0 defeat to Eibar this weekend, the striker was replaced after falling awkwardly, and was then seen crying on the sidelines as his team-mates tried to console him.

"No update has been given by Celta Vigo yet, as their 2-0 loss to Eibar has just gone final, but there are reports that Rossi has possibly suffered yet another ACL tear, this time in his left knee," one report added.

It's a heartbreaking turn of events for the 30-year-old, who was at one point a prolific marksman in Spain during his time with Villarreal, where he hit 54 goals in 136 games before departing for Fiorentina.

But it was there that his injury problems really held him back. Though he managed to hit a 14-minute hat trick against Juventus to condemn them to their first defeat in Florence for 15 years, he could only muster 33 games across three seasons.

At his age, it would be amazing if he could battle back to full fitness again and enjoy something of an Indian summer before having to hang up his boots.

We're wishing him all the best.
