Sergio Garcia was all smiles after his Masters win, and would certainly not be complaining about the length of his fiancée Angela Akins’ skirt as she offered him a congratulatory embrace.

That, however, did not stop golf commentator Peter Alliss from casting a snide remark in her direction with regards to the garment when she appeared on the screen, as he said in a muffled voice: “she’s got the shortest skirt on the campus.”

Alliss confirmed that he thought he was off air when he made the comment, but agreed that it was “inappropriate.”

Viewers who were tuned into the event that saw Garcia claim his first ever major by pipping Brit rival Justin Rose to the trophy, caught the off-hand comment and that triggered calls for Alliss’ immediate removal with some claiming that the commentator “ruined Garcia’s finest moment (with the) disgraceful comment.”

And it’s not the first time the 86-year-old commentator has come under fire for such remarks.

In 2015, Alliss claimed that equality for women has “b*****ed” up the game for many. He then went on to comment on whether Paul Dunne liked older women after he was seen hugging his mother.

Another of his infamous comments in 2015 came when he said that Zach Johnson’s wife would want to spend his prize money on a new kitchen.

In 2016, Alliss said that women who want to join Muirfield club should marry a member after the club rejected letting female members join.

And this year, prior to the skirt comment, he said that he does not care for “macho women” that are “prevalent today.”

It is without a doubt that Alliss’ sexist comments will not go down well with women’s rights groups and it is no surprise that many have called for him to be axed from the BBC commentating team.

Some angered fans of the sport took to twitter to hit out at Allis, with comments such as:

“BBC Sport get rid of Peter Alliss NOW. He just ruined Sergio’s finest moment making a disgraceful comment about his fiance’s skirt.”

“Peter Alliss convinces me I’m not imagining this by making a mildly sexist comment about Sergio’s partners skirt off mic! #themasters”

“Peter Alliss commenting on Sergio’s missus’ short skirt, thinking he’s not being picked up by the mics!”

As for Sergio Garcia, he wouldn’t be paying much attention to Alliss’s remarks as he produced one of the sport’s most memorable performances to take the green jacket in what has been described golf’s “perfect story.”

After 73 appearances at Majors, four runner-ups, 12 times in the top five, and 22 in the top 10, it goes without saying that the Spaniard fully deserved the prize after it seemed as though he was going to settle for second or third place again.

Two shots down, he turned the tables on his own misfortunes and grabbed an unlikely par followed by a birdie and a terrific eagle at the 15th, but a missed opportunity on the 16th saw him fall back again into the eagerly waiting arms of second and third place.

It was down to thery wire and on the 18th, Garcia capitalised on Rose’s miss to sink a four-footer and take it away to make history in an epic contest.
