The dead rubber match between Great Britain and France in the Davis Cup this year turned into more of a show of comedy than skill. As Britain's Dan Evans took on Julian Benneteau in the fourth match between the two countries, his French opponent brought on Nicholas Mahut and coach Yannick Noah to his side of the court to play, making light of a somewhat meaningless game. And social media went crazy, with Judy Murray, mother of Jamie and Andy Murray, praising the sense of fun in what could have been a boring game. France had already advanced to the semi-finals after Benneteau and Mahut defeated British duo Dominic Inglot and Jamie Murray in a doubles match 9-7 5-7 7-5 7-5, claiming a third win out of the five matches to play.So what better way to enjoy it than to entertain the crowd for a while before Evans claimed some dignity back with a win, avoiding a complete whitewash for Great Britain. The British team struggled hugely with Andy Murray, the world number one, on the sidelines with an injury, but played well in their first three matches despite losing to the French team.Evans easily won the first set 6-1 against Benneteau, and after taking a 3-0 lead in the next set, that's when the fun began. The Brit took the French team's display with a pinch of salt, smiling and laughing as he endured being the butt of the gag for a few minutes. He also wanted to add to the funny scene by bringing on regular supporter Jamie MacDonald to the court, before the referee Soren Friemel decided that enough was enough, and chose to end the gag and resume play as normal.

But, Evans just wanted to give a fan what they wanted, as he told the Telegraph: "For sure, the referee should have let Jamie on - it was not as if I picked out a random [person].”

After that, he won the second set 6-2 and stopped Great Britain from being whitewashed.

France's victory will see them face Serbia in the next round, which will undoubtedly be a tough one against the ace Novak Djokovic, who helped the Serbian team defeat Spain in the quarter-final round.

You can catch the next round of the World Group on September 15.
