The horror and beauty of football was showcased in one evening yesterday as the Borussia Dortmund side fell victims to three bus bombs.Defender Marc Bartra suffered a broken wrist and had surgery on his injury last night. But, luckily, no other Dortmund players were harmed in the attack. The team bus was attacked as the team was on their way to their home of the Westfalenstadion where they were set to face Monaco in the last eight of the Champions League. The support from the Monaco fans in the stadium was incredible as they chanted "Dortmund" at the top of their lungs to show their solidarity. In return, many Dortmund supporters put Monaco fans up for the night so that they could witness the rearranged fixture between the sides on Wednesday night.Of the attack, Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke said: “The whole team is in a state of shock, you can’t get pictures like that out of your head. We must get through this but it will not be easy for the players.”Goalkeeper Roman Burki, who was sat next to Bartra during the incident, told Swiss newspaper Blick: "We left the hotel and went down the street. The bus turned down the main street, and there was a giant explosion.

"After the bang, we all ducked in the bus and those who could threw themselves to the ground. We did not know had happened.

"We're all shocked - nobody thought of a football match in this moment."

Former player Henrikh Mkhitaryan, now of Manchester United, was one of the first players on Twitter to show his support for Dortmund as he wrote: "Deeply shocked by the explosions last night in Dortmund. Sending my support to BVB, the fans & wishing a speedy recovery to Marc Bartra."

Lukas Podolski and Manchester United have also tweeted the German heavyweights, among many others.

It's going to be tough for BVB to regroup and face a young and hungry Monaco side tonight in a vital home leg of the tie.
