With Leicester set to take on Atletico Madrid in the last eight of the Champions League, we decided to take a look at another British side that defied the odds and exceeded all expectations in Europe's premier competition.

Leeds United are battling for a spot in the Championship playoffs at the time of writing and have been as low as League One since they made the final four of the Champions League back in the 2000-01 season.

But under David O'Leary, the Yorkshire side had a sensational run in Europe and came close to winning the Premier League.

All of that came at great expense, and chairman Peter Risedale seemingly failed to handle that side of things too well.

Still, they were only two legs against Valencia away from featuring in a Champions League final and after drawing the first leg 0-0 at Elland Road, we look at the nearly men that went on to lose 3-0 at the Mestalla.

Nigel Martyn - The goalkeeper made 23 appearances for England as David Seaman's understudy and racked up 207 appearances for Leeds. Was officially named their greatest goalkeeper ever.

Danny Mills - The full-back turned pundit made 19 appearances for England and was a steely addition to the backline at Elland Road. Not the most glamorous player, but tough.

Rio Ferdinand - Before he played a vital part in six Premier League titles, three league cups and a Champions League success for Man United, Rio was a raw but talented centre-half for Leeds. Still their most expensive signing (£18 million) and highest received fee (£30 million)

Dominic Matteo - The six-time Scottish international scored a goal against AC Milan en route to the semis and at 6"2' was a commanding presence at the back. Had spells with Blackburn and Stoke after Leeds.

Ian Harte - The Irish international was a free-kick specialist who scored 28 goals in 213 games for Leeds - not too shabby for a left-back. Scored 16 in a single season for Carlisle in League One back in 2009-10 and then bagged 11 the following season a tier higher for Reading. Now works as an agent.

Eirik Bakke - The 27-time Norwegian international was a steady but unspectacular midfielder for Leeds and other than a loan spell with Aston Villa, spent the majority of his career in his homeland.

Oliver Dacourt - The ball-winning midfielder was eventually forced out of Leeds by Terry Venables and enjoyed success with Roma and Inter Milan. Still a favourite with the Leeds fans for his aggressive style.

David Batty - Speaking of aggression, his midfield partner and hometown boy, David Batty, was also a force to be reckoned with. However, he is mostly remembered for missing a penalty for England against Argentina at the 1998 World Cup.

Harry Kewell - One of the most talented players of that era. The Australian winger had sublime technique and a wonderful knack for scoring goals. However, he failed to live up the hype at Liverpool and his career faded with injuries. Now the head coach of Watford's Under 23 side.

Mark Viduka - The tall but technical Australian was prolific during his time at Elland Road and is mostly remembered for bagging four goals in one game against Liverpool.

Alan Smith - Born in west Yorkshire, Smith was another local lad who brought plenty of fire and heart to the side. Because of his industrious nature, he was eventually converted into a centre mdfielder by Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, but he scored five goals in the Champions League during this campaign.

Subs

Paul Robinson - Finally usurped Nigel Martyn in the 2002-03 season and went on to win 42 caps for England.

Jonathan Woodgate - Although injuries have blighted his career, he certainly played for some big clubs like Newcastle, Spurs and, of course, Real Madrid.

Gary Kelly - The Irish international was a steady right-back for Leeds for all 15 years of his career racking up 430 appearances. Remarkably, he is also Ian Harte's uncle.

Stephen McPhail - Another Irishman in the ranks, McPhail was a playmaking midfielder who never truly established himself at Leeds. He would go on to spend seven years with Cardiff.

Jason Wilcox - The flying left winger enjoyed the pinnacle of his career with Blackburn Rovers and never quite replicate that form with Leeds. Now manager of Manchester City's Under 18s.

Alan Maybury - Another Irishman, Maybury only made one appearance that season for Leeds and it came in the Champions League. Had 10 clubs during his career.

Jacob Burns - The nippy Aussie winger only made a grand total of six appearances for Leeds in three years, but found more joy once he dropped down to play for Barnsley.
