Leicester City boss Craig Shakespeare must have felt a sense of relief when the final whistle was blown as the Vicente Calderon last night.Although he felt his side were hard done by with the first-half penalty, won and scored by Antoine Griezmann, a 1-0 defeat wasn’t the worst result in the world for the Foxes.Atletico Madrid dominated the match from start to finish. They had 64 per cent possession, 15 attempts at goal and completed 85 per cent of their 537 passes.Leicester, on the other hand, had 36 per cent possession, six attempts at goal (zero on target) and managed to complete just 73 per cent of their 215 passes.

Diego Simeone will be immensely frustrated that his side failed to put the tie to bed. As Leicester demonstrated against Sevilla last month, they’re a very different proposition back at the King Power Stadium.

Vardy recorded one truly embarrassing stat v Atleti

Jamie Vardy scored the all important away goal at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan back in February - Claudio Ranieri’s final match in charge of the reigning Premier League champions - but the England international failed to trouble Jan Oblak at the Calderon.

In fact, the 30-year-old recorded one of the most embarrassing statistics you’re ever likely to see.

According to journalist Dermot Corrigan, UEFA stats claim Vardy completed zero - ZERO - passes during his 77 minutes on the pitch.

How is that even possible?

Of his two attempted passes, neither came off.

Opta stats say that Vardy completed one of his passes, but Kieran Canning - another football journalist - pointed out this was a shot that went so far wide Riyad Mahrez ended up getting the ball before it went out for a throw-in.

It would be extremely generous to call that a completed pass.

UEFA's stats sheet. posted to Twitter by Daniel Taylor, proves Vardy  failed to complete a single pass.

Slimani completed more passes in 15 minutes

To make matters worse for Vardy, Islam Slimani - the man who replaced Vardy with just over 10 minutes remaining - managed to complete three of his five attempted passes.

Don't rule Vardy out from making an impact next week

Still, you wouldn’t bet against Vardy making a big impact during next week’s return leg.

Following Wednesday’s disappointing display he’ll be chomping at the bit to make amends next week, keeping Leicester’s Champions League dream alive in the process.
