Leicester City were able to leave the Vicente Calderon Stadium last night with their Champions League dream still intact after losing only 1-0 to Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their quarter-final tie.

The Foxes held their own against Atletico, one of Europe's top teams, and conceded the only goal of the game through a controversial penalty.

Antoine Griezmann was tripped by Marc Albrighton who conceded the foul, but replays showed the collision happened outside the box, and a harsh penalty was awarded to the home side.

Griezmann accepted the gift and dispatched the spot-kick midway through the first half.

Leicester fans must have been fearing the worst but their side were able to slam the door on Atletico and went into halftime just one goal down.

The Foxes played even better in the second half and completely nullified the threat of their opponents star man, Griezmann, who had little joy against the English outfit.

Manager Craig Shakespeare, who replaced the sacked Claudio Ranieri in February, made a tactical change to ensure the Atletico forward became almost ineffective.

Andy King, who came on during the break, explained exactly how Leicester stopped Griezmann.

"We could see what he was capable of in the first-half", he told BT Sport after the game, as per the Metro

"We tried to put a man in holding midfield, get a man in and around him and I think it worked pretty well for us."

This could turn out to be useful information for other Premier League clubs. Griezmann has been linked with a move to Manchester United for a few months, and as he continues to impress on a weekly basis in Spain, fans will be desperate for Jose Mourinho to sign him.

The 26-year-old has scored 24 times in 44 games in all competitions for Madrid this season, and he's also chipped in with nine assists, proving he is one of the most dangerous forwards in Europe right now.

Leicester did very well to stop the immediate threat Griezmann carries, even if it was just for 45 minutes. The performance gives them hope for the return leg of their quarter-final tie at the King Power Stadium next week.
