Demetrious Johnson did what he does best on Saturday night, as he successfully defended his UFC flyweight championship against Wilson Reis via a third-round submission.

It wasn’t an ordinary title defence, though, as this marked his 10th consecutive title defence which puts him on level with the legendary Anderson Silva and many are believing that it’s only a matter of time before he stretches that run to 11.

RECORD-TYING DEFENCE

The 30-year-old American last tasted defeat in 2011 when he was part of the bantamweight division, losing to Dominick Cruz in a unanimous decision and after drawing his next fight Ian McCall, he’s won 12 fights on the bounce which puts him level with Georges St-Pierre.

When you bring up the greatest UFC fighter of all time, the focus immediately falls on the likes of The Spider, GSP, Chuck Liddell and BJ Penn – but you can probably add Mighty Mouse to that elite list now too.

That’s according to UFC president Dana White, who was understandably singing the flyweight king’s praises after another flawless victory in Kansas City.

While some might claim Silva is the greatest because DJ is yet to break the record and also went 16-0 before surrendering his middleweight title to Chris Weidman, it’s hard to ignore what Johnson has done as the topic of the greatest of all time is brought up again.

That’s something White agrees with as well but admitted it’s difficult not to call him the greatest.

MIGHTY MOUSE THE GOAT?

According to MMAFighting, he said: “Listen, he’s got one more fight, and if he breaks Anderson Silva’s record?

“Listen, he’s already the best pound for pound fighter in the world and he strives to be better each time, and he gets better each time, literally destroying people.

“This kid could be considered the GOAT right now. Or, to give Anderson Silva the true respect, wait until he actually breaks the record and it’s hard not to call this guy the greatest of all time.”

He also went on to note just how eager he is to become a better fighter.

He added: “So, what’s crazy is [Johnson] does what he does here tonight, right? And I’m doing an interview with Brazil, and I hear him ask his coach [Matt Hume], ‘What did I do wrong?’ I stopped and said, ‘Hey coach, let me answer this for you – nothing.’

“He did nothing wrong. I mean he literally – first of all, he looked incredible on his feet, and the punch stat numbers are ridiculous, right?

“Then he goes to the ground and is absolutely dominating, and then goes for the most dangerous move you can try and pull off, an armbar. And not only pulling off an armbar when you’re dominating like that but doing it against a Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion.

“The guy’s an absolute freak of nature.”

It’s probably a topic that won’t ever have a definitive answer, like we see in most sports, but there’s no denying that Johnson deserves to be recognised in that elite group of fighters for what he’s achieved.

The only issue is whether his appeal is what keeps him down, as it’s clear he’s not a massive draw compared to others in the same discussion.
