UFC president Dana White’s decision to have Georges St-Pierre make his long-awaited return this year against Michael Bisping has people buzzing. Combat sports fans had been waiting for his next fight for some time and now it’s on the horizon.
The proposed bout will see both men vying for Bisping’s middleweight championship and the living legend wants to prove that he still has it. Also, this is one of the few matches where two fighters with absolute star power on this roster will meet in the octagon.
St-Pierre will be getting his title shot before a number of challengers that have been active this entire time. Some have argued that his star-status alone makes this decision a no-brainer among the UFC’s decision-makers.
Bisping has mentioned that he believes that this fight is part of a larger scheme by GSP to further establish his place as one of the best fighters of all time.
The plot forwarded by the champ argues that the Canadian-born fighter is trying to eventually meet Conor McGregor in a fight that would be the single largest one that the UFC had ever seen and possibly the biggest ever in Mixed Martial Arts.
If that were true, GSP will still have to get by Bisping first in order to set his plan in motion. Toppling the current champion will be no small task as The Count figures to be a little bigger than his opponent.
None of that matters to St-Pierre though, if his comments to RT Sport recently are to be believed. He responded to the claims that he had a master plan and also took aim at his opponent ahead of their bout.
GSP said: “Of course Michael Bisping will be bigger than me but I believe that will be the only advantage that he will have -- his size. Technically, tactically, athletically, I have all the edges on him.
“It doesn’t matter if he’s taller and bigger than me. The only difference that it’s gonna make is when he hits the floor, it’s gonna make a bigger boom.
“It’s a very ambitious plan [Bisping laid out], I have a plan in the back of my head but I’m not gonna talk about it right now because I’m not a talker, I’m a doer.”
With that said, it seems that he is solely focused on Bisping and the other manuvering will have to wait for another day. Don’t be surprised if it’s on his radar now though.
