Real Madrid's 6-3 aggregate win over Bayern Munich was nothing if not controversial.

The two European juggernauts probably deserved to meet in the final, but we were treated to the spectacle of them going head to head in the last eight instead.

In a game of such importance and with so much world-class talent on display, it was a pity that it was arguably the referee who had the biggest impact.

Carlo Ancelotti's side will be feeling aggrieved this morning, and rightly so.

Arturo Vidal appeared to win the ball for the challenge that saw him sent off, while at least one of Cristiano Ronaldo's three goals was offside and another was borderline.

The Bavarians will just have to wait another year for a crack at the Champions League.

As for Madrid, they've now been installed as favourites. And with refereeing like that, Gerard Pique might say, of course they're going to be favourites. Luck seems to be on Zinedine Zidane's side.

However, that should take nothing away from Ronaldo's hat-trick.

It was a special night for the Portuguese as he hit his 100th goal in the competition and put Bayern to the sword in extra time.

Unfortunately, though, it wasn't just the officials who had put something of a dampener on his achievements.

What had upset Ronaldo?

Throughout the first half, the Bernabeu faithful could be heard whistling CR7 as they grew frustrated. At that point, it still looked as if Bayern were right in the tie.

Madrid fans should know by now that for as long as Ronaldo's on the pitch, he's always got a goal in him.

After his opener, he made exactly that point by turning towards the fans and putting his finger to his lips, as reported in the Mirror.

The 32-year-old is supposedly having a bit of an off season, though he's still scored 27 goals for Los Blancos.

He's unlikely to reach his customary half century of goals this term, but it's understandable that he expects the club's supporters to be a tad more grateful for his efforts.

"I just ask that they don't whistle me," he told Antena 3, via the Mirror.

"I always give my best, I work and I help Real Madrid. I didn't tell them to be quiet – never.

"But I take the positive things. The team was good, we played well and obviously I'm happy with the goals."
