Atletico Madrid would have expected a far more comfortable passage into the last four of the Champions League after drawing Leicester City in the quarter-finals.

Diego Simeone’s side were looking to reach the semi-finals of the competitions for the third time in four seasons and were backed to brush aside the Foxes with ease.

Antoine Griezmann’s penalty gave them a 1-0 victory in the first leg at the Vicente Calderon - although the foul by Marc Albrighton appeared to be outside the penalty area.

It meant the Spanish side knew that an away goal in the return leg would effectively kill off the tie with Leicester needing three to stand any chance of progression.

And when Saul Niguez put the away side ahead with a fantastic header in the 26th minute at the King Power Stadium, it looked as though Atleti were on easy street.

But Leicester came out fighting in the second half and Jamie Vardy’s strike with half an hour remaining gave the Premier League champions hope. But, despite loads of pressure, they couldn’t quite find a second goal to set up a grandstand finish.

Although they crashed out of the competition, Craig Shakespeare’s side can certainly hold their head high after giving Atleti a tough 180 minutes.

They certainly gave Atletico star Griezmann a tough time. The Frenchman may have scored the winning penalty in the first leg but he failed to influence the game as he would have liked in Spain.

And, on Tuesday night, we only saw a couple of glimpses of his brilliance as he was kept remarkably quiet once again.

But, as we say, he did show the occasional moment of brilliance.

And, in the second half, he did just that.

The superstar collected the ball on the halfway line with his back to goal but he had one thing in his mind - run towards Leicester’s goal.

He showed his incredible pace by beating Wes Morgan and Cristian Fuchs with ease, whilst powering away from Danny Drinkwater.

The run took him to the six-yard box but, instead of shooting, he attempted to square the ball to a teammate. Unfortunately for the La Liga side, Griezmann’s pass was slightly overhit and Leicester survived.

But what a run.

Griezmann's run

Take a look:

Whether or not we’ll be seeing these kinds of penetrating runs from Griezmann in the Premier League next season remains to be seen. The forward is being heavily linked with a move to Manchester United but he’ll be busy concentrating on trying to win the Champions League with Atleti first.
