For years now, the enigmatic figure of Cristiano Ronaldo has dominated the sport of football along with Barcelona superstar, Lionel Messi. The two are goal scoring machines, notching 40, 50 strikes a season like it is simply the norm. Most other strikers would consider it their greatest ever achievement, for those two, it is an average campaign at best.Ronaldo seems like he was born to put the ball in the back of the net, maybe even more so than his rival.

The Argentine operates as more of a playmaker, perhaps influencing proceedings more, but if you need a goal, the Los Blancos star is the man to go to.

More than a goal a game for Real Madrid is all the information you need to know and a lot of his prowess in the penalty box may be down to former Manchester United first team coach, Rene Meulensteen.

Speaking to BBC 5 Live, the Dutchman discusses his work with Ronaldo and the targets he used to set him in order to progress as a goal scorer.

Ronaldo has always paid tribute to his time in Manchester as his work with those under the Sir Alex Ferguson regime built him into the footballing juggernaut he is today. Although, the 32-year-old did have trouble understanding the Scot.

“I still don’t understand him! In the beginning, I had a translator, a Brazilian man, of course, basically only for him", he said, via Manchester Evening News.

The Portuguese forward won his first Ballon d'Or while in the famous red shirt and still today, he supports the English giants from the Spanish capital.

“I’m a huge supporter of Manchester United - as I say many times, I’m very comfortable in Real Madrid now, I feel happy… But as people know I like Manchester United, I love that club, but [the] future, nobody knows. But right now I feel good and I feel happy in Real Madrid.”

After arriving from Sporting Lisbon as almost a prepubescent, stroppy kid, Ronaldo left the north of England a man and has enjoyed the type of career few sportsmen will ever experience.

Red Devils fans still pray he will one day return to the club, although, now that his favourite teacher, Meulensteen, is not there, he may think twice.
