With WrestleMania 33 now in the books, fans can only look back and wonder what could have happened had WWE not continued to alter their plans.

At one stage, John Cena looked the favourite to battle The Undertaker in Orlando on April 2 but that honour obviously went to Roman Reigns as The Big Dog reigned supreme and effectively retired The Phenom in the process.

16TH WORLD TITLE

One of the more confusion booking decisions took place earlier this year when Cena returned on SmackDown LIVE and continued his feud with AJ Styles, and that resulted in Cena claiming his 16th world championship which put him level with Ric Flair.

A quick game of hot potato then followed, as Cena went on to drop the WWE Championship at the Elimination Chamber when Bray Wyatt emerged victorious, before Randy Orton dethroned The Eater of Worlds at WrestleMania 33.

However, things could have been so different according to a new report from Billi Bhatti of The Dirty Sheets podcast.

He shared the news on Sportskeeda, and explained how one idea from Kevin Dunn resulted in numerous plans being changed.

According to Billi, the reason Cena was awarded a short run as WWE Champion was because he agreed to propose to Nikki Bella at WrestleMania; that was the idea put forward by Dunn and initially, Cena wasn’t a big fan of it but gave in after some pestering from Vince.

PROPOSAL

It doesn’t end there, though, as he went on add that the original plan for the Royal Rumble was to have The Undertaker defeat AJ Styles for the WWE Championship.

The Phenomenal One would then go on to recapture it at the Elimination Chamber event and then defend the gold against Orton at WrestleMania – who was always pencilled in to win the Royal Rumble and then face Wyatt at the Elimination Chamber.

It’s clear that WWE prioritised Cena’s proposal over anything else, as the same source claimed that this decision resulted in Shinsuke Nakamura not being able to debut at the Grandest Stage of Them All against The Miz for the Intercontinental Championship.

It’s a shame that fans had to miss out on these matches simply for one decision, and although we’re eventually going to get Styles vs. Orton down the line, it would have been even better had it happened in Orlando, rather than witnessing the lacklustre encounter between Orton and Wyatt.
