There was a lot of excitement when Goldberg made his return to WWE last year, and that quickly turned into shock when he ended up doing the complete opposite of what most fans thought would happen at Survivor Series.

The end goal was to lose to Brock Lesnar, and it was thought that his final match would be at Survivor Series where The Beast Incarnate would finally get revenge for his WrestleMania XX loss against the same opponent.

DOMINANT RUN

Instead, Goldberg won – very quickly.

However, the excitement didn’t last too long as some fans eventually turned on him and started to cheer for Lesnar; that was evident at the Hall of Fame ceremony as boos echoed inside of the arena when he was shown on screen.

Despite that, WWE continued to push him from his first victory and that resulted in Goldberg eliminating Lesnar from the Royal Rumble as he went on to defeat Kevin Owens to become the Universal Champion before finally dropping it to Lesnar on April 2 in Orlando.

It was revealed earlier this year that Paul Heyman was helping Goldberg with his promo work, but now Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter has revealed that there was one star that behind Goldberg’s pre-WrestleMania 33 domination.

According to Meltzer, it was Lesnar himself who wanted WWE to book Goldberg this way.

BACKSTAGE INFLUENCE

Apparently, Lesnar knew that a win over Goldberg at WrestleMania would mean a whole lot more if Goldberg looked unbeatable heading into the event, and actively lobbied for his rival to look strong in the build-up to their final encounter.

This is why WWE booked Goldberg to eliminate Lesnar from the Royal Rumble in January – again, rather quickly – before he claimed the Universal Championship not long after.

Meltzer also noted that the worry is that other WWE headliners may not be as accommodating as Lesnar was if Goldberg decides to make an in-ring return later this year as that option is still there.

Goldberg also trusted the long-term process of the WWE as his feud was with Lesnar, and he didn’t have to worry about WWE’s creative team meddling with the storyline and trying to ruin things because of the impact Lesnar has backstage.

It was good of Lesnar to make sure Goldberg was booked like a beast during his potential final run in WWE, as that’s perhaps the least he deserved following his sour exit from the company 13 years ago.

Then again, it could have also been a better way for Lesnar to make himself look even better by wiping out the biggest threat around.

Either way, the matches may have been short but they certainly delivered.
