Another week is quickly passing by without an agreement between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather for their proposed superfight. It’s becoming a weekly tradition of news trickling in, some guarded optimism about the progress and then silence again.

None of that cycle has stopped pundits, other fighters and fans of the sport from weighing in on what many people are calling the fight of the century. Recently Al Iaquinta gave his take to Champions.co on what is happening to the lightweight division while Notorious is away.

His return for the octagon is set for this weekend, but he seems interested on what will happen to the rankings in the UFC’s lightweight ladder as everyone waits for McGregor and Mayweather to come to any kind of an agreement on dates, times, and purses.

Iaquinta said: “Man it’s tough to say, but right now, I think Tony Ferguson is the guy. Obviously Khabib [Nurmagomedov] was there, but I really think right now it’s Tony Ferguson. I don’t think there are many people that want to fight him.

“Tony Ferguson is the man right now. Ferguson is the guy. I know [Conor] McGregor has the title right now, but I think Ferguson is a bad night for him. Tony has a great chin and he will just walk through anything. I think if Tony gets it to the ground he’s got all the chokes and stuff, so he’s dangerous everywhere.”

These statements sound familiar for a man that also recently said that the best fight at 155 pounds right now was Ferguson and Nurmagomedov. That fight doesn’t look like it’s close right now, but it could possibly be revisited at a later date.

With every passing day, more fighters are weighing in on the biggest possible fight in combat sport right now. Most would point to the UFC’s biggest fighter against the unbeaten Amerian, but there are still people who would like to see McGregor get back into the octagon.

That doesn’t seem likely as the Irish-born fighter is dead-set on Mayweather being his next opponent. Recently he told the press that he would be open to fighting Manny Pacquiao if the Money Team couldn’t come to an agreement with Dana White.

Whatever happens, El Cucuy will be waiting for Notorious whenever he is done and that might be just as entertaining as this boxing match. Hopefully, McGregor will be ready and willing to throw down once this huge bout runs its course.
