UFC president Dana White’s decision to insert Georges St-Pierre into a title match with Michael Bisping as a part of his long-awaited return later this summer has people buzzing. Combat sports fans had been anticipating this for some time and now it’s almost here.

This proposed bout will see both men competing for Bisping’s middleweight championship and the living legend wants to make a statement in his first fight back. Also, this would present a rare match where two fighters with true star power on this roster will meet inside the octagon.

St-Pierre will be getting his title shot before a number of challengers that have been active during his absence. Some have argued that being a huge star makes up for this fact, but some have yet to get over him leapfrogging other contenders in a return match.

That isn’t to say that GSP hasn’t been paying attention to the current UFC landscape, he obviously has been watching from afar. In fact, in an interview with RT Sports, the former champ laid out who he thinks has the best case for his number one pound-for-pound fighter.

He said: “I think actually one of the best pound-for-pound in the world, maybe the best pound-for-pound in the world is Khabib Nurmagomedov. I always said it. For me, he’s probably the best pound-for-pound. Unfortunately, I believe people don’t give him enough credit.

“Maybe because he’s not American, he’s not someone who talks a lot of trash like Conor McGregor, he’s someone who’s very respectful, he doesn’t make a lot of noise by talking. But the same thing, like I said before about me, is that the resume speaks for itself.”

Those are strong words from someone as accomplished as St-Pierre. The Eagle has indeed beaten everyone that he has stepped into the cage with. If he had gone through with the fight against Tony Ferguson, then maybe perception would have flipped on him.

Until he can get back out there and complete a high profile fight against one of the top talents in the lightweight division, he’s going to have a hard time convincing anyone of his case as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the sport.

For GSP, he has his own fight with Bisping to be worried about. Hopefully he can have a good showing and claim the belt. That will make his opinion on these matters even more decisive than it is now.
