After Manchester City were ridiculed for their decision to wear t-shirts bearing Ilkay Gundogan’s name after the German suffered a serious knee injury, we didn’t think we’d see a repeat. However, Manchester United have followed in the footsteps of their city rivals by wearing the names of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcos Rojo on their back during their warm-up against Burnley this afternoon. The two United players suffered knee ligament damage in Thursday’s 2-1 extra-time victory over Anderlecht and will be ruled out for the remainder of the season, at the very least. So, to show their support, their teammates decided to pay tribute to the injured duo. They probably thought they were doing something classy and would be praised for it.However, Twitter had other ideas and humiliated the Red Devils for their actions.

In fairness, as far as Ibrahimovic is concerned, United players are unsurprisingly ‘mourning the loss’ of their star striker.

The 35-year-old has scored 28 goals this season and, with his current deal expiring at the end of the season, may have played his last game for the club.

Jose Mourinho was set to trigger the extra one-year contract given his impressive performances this season but, with him set to be sidelined for at least nine months, that now appears very much in doubt.

According to the Mirror, though, even if Ibrahimovic does leave the club this summer, the club will continue to offer their support through the rehabilitation stage.

“Zlatan will be given the club’s support throughout his rehabilitation,” a source said.

“If that means helping him beyond the final few months of his contract then that will happen.”
