Once Anthony Martial gets going, he’s very difficult to stop, as Joey Barton found out this afternoon. The Burnley midfielder, 34, had the unenviable task of chasing Manchester United’s No. 11 following a swift counter-attack by the Red Devils.Martial produced a neat little skill to evade Barton before sprinting through the middle of the pitch.Everybody inside Turf Moor, plus the millions watching around the world, must have expected Barton to take one for the team. A foul on Martial, break down United’s counter-attack and take the yellow card. However, the foul never came, Martial continued to motor forward before picking out Ander Herrera on the right flank.

Martial left Barton eating his dust

Without the ball, Martial put even more distance between himself and Barton before receiving the ball back and sticking it past Tom Heaton into the back of the Burnley net.

It was a brilliant counter-attack - reminiscent of the United of old - and Barton was mocked on Twitter for the manner in which he lost his one-v-one sprint against Martial.

Don't be too harsh on Barton - he is 34

In fairness to Barton, he was chasing a forward 13 years his junior.

Furthermore, he did remarkably well to keep within touching distance of the France international.

But he’ll surely be asking himself why he failed to take down Martial while he had the opportunity.

Rooney made it 2-0 before half-time

Burnley were left facing an uphill battle once Jose Mourinho’s side took the lead.

The Red Devils then doubled their advantage five minutes before half-time when Wayne Rooney finished from close range following more good work from Martial.
