Rafael Nadal has won his tenth Monte Carlo Masters title. The Spaniard beat his compatriot Albert Ramos-Vinolas in straight sets, and will be hoping to carry his form into the French Open. The “king of clay” prevailed after dropping only four sets in the final. Fellow Spaniard Ramos-Vinolas was fighting an uphill battle from the offset when Nadal broke him early on in the match and went on to clinch the first set 6-1.Ramos-Vinolas - who had knocked Andy Murray out - put up a valiant display in the second set, but the powerhouse, Nadal, was too strong to contend with and never seemed in trouble. He clinched the second set 6-3 in close to a faultless performance. With the French Open fast approaching, the victory will give Rafa extra confidence in claiming another title at Roland Garros. With his last victory coming in 2014, the man from Mallorca will be eager to get things right and win ‘La Decima’ this time around. After accepting his 10th trophy in Monte Carlo, he spoke with the air of a man who is aware that he is nearing the end of his career and thanked everybody for their support over the years. In a humble acceptance speech, the 34-year-old said he finds it difficult to explain how he feels after the win and was in a reflective mood.“The first time I was here in 2003, I had probably the best tournament of my career, in that moment. Playing the qualifier, going through and playing the third round, so a lot of years later here we are with 10 titles."That is something that I never dreamed, so I can just say thanks to life for giving me this opportunity and thank you very much to all the people for their great support during all the years.”

With the win, Nadal has made himself the most successful clay court player of all time. He surpassed Argentinian, Guillermo Vilas, with his 50th title today.

Record breaker Nadal will now look forward to playing his home country Spain at the Barcelona Open.
