If you asked Lionel Messi how he would like to score his 500th goal for Barcelona, he probably would have said: “An injury-time winner in the El Clasico at the Bernabeu.”And that’s exactly what happened. With the score poised at 2-2, Jordi Alba’s pullback fell perfectly for the Argentine superstar to slot the ball past Keylor Navas and haul Barca right back into the title race. And how would he celebrate reaching half a century of goal?By holding up his shirt to the Madrid fans to remind them who had just scored twice against them and dented their title hopes. Trust us, Lionel, they’re fully aware exactly who you are.So it’s 500 up for Messi, 13 years and 577 appearances after making his debut for the club. Incredible. The tributes will pour in for Messi over the coming days as the footballing world acknowledge his incredible achievement. In fact, it didn’t take teammate Luis Suarez long to congratulate Messi on reaching this milestone. The forward took to Instagram after the match to write: “The team was great! Everybody's effort was SPECTACULAR 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻 With the best player in HISTORY 💯💯💯💯💯 Congratulations my friend !!!!! @leomessi.”And his club have now commemorated his feat. They have posted a video on Twitter calling it: “The video you simply cannot miss.”The clip, that is narrated by a man sounding very similar to naturalist David Attenborough, tells the story of Messi scoring his very first goal for Barcelona. As well as showing his first goal against Albacete back in May 2005, the clip shows some of Messi’s best goal throughout the years.“499 goals later, he’s still the same player, he’s still the same player who scored that first one.”

Messi will just be hoping that his 500th goal has major implications on the La Liga title come the end of the season.

Barca’s victory in El Clasico meant they are now level on points with Madrid - although they’re ahead on the head-to-head record.

However, Zinedine Zidane’s side have a game in hand and are still favourites to win the title with them having just six matches left to play.

Whether or not Messi’s last-gasp winner helps Barcelona win the league remains to be seen but one thing is for sure, reaching 500 goals for the club is an unbelievable achievement.
