After such a magnificent season for Manchester United, it’s a real shame that Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s campaign has been prematurely ended by an awful injury. The 35-year-old striker suffered knee ligament damage during United’s Europa League quarter-final victory over Anderlecht last Thursday and now faces up to 12 months on the sidelines.Zlatan, according to the Mirror, has subsequently accepted his United career is over as he targets a return to action in Major League Soccer. If the Swedish icon does leave Old Trafford in the summer, he’ll forever hold a place in the hearts of United’s grateful fans.Ibrahimovic netted a superb 28 goals in 46 appearances this season and won the EFL Cup for the English giants against Southampton almost single-handedly.But it now appears that his spell with the Red Devils is already over.

Tributes have poured in for Zlatan

Tributes have flooded in for Zlatan over the past few days and not just from football fans.

His former clubs, teammates and even opponents have sent messages to the charismatic centre-forward wishing him all the best for the future.

Zlatan receives message from his hero, Ronaldo

And now his idol, Ronaldo, has sent him a message via Instagram

“Ibra, my positive thinking is that you have a good recovery, and come back even stronger as you wish,” the Brazilian striker wrote. “The force is in our will! You have my support, respect and admiration for facing the injury with this warrior spirit of overcoming adversity.”

Ronaldo, of course, recovered from two career-threatening knee injuries during his career, so Ibrahimovic will no doubt appreciate the message.

Zlatan: I wanted to be exactly like Ronaldo

That it comes from the player he looked up to growing up makes it even more special.

"I think Ronaldo was phenomenal," Zlatan told United Review, per Sky Sports, back in November. "He was the player that whatever he did it became…'wow'! He could do a difficult thing and it became magic.

"He would take the ball and it was like him saying 'I'll take care of it now'. You didn't have that kind of football player before and you don't have it today. He doesn't exist.

"As a young player I watched him and said to myself 'I want to be exactly like that'… the player who makes the difference, the shining light, simple as that."

Ronaldinho sends classy message to Ibra

Meanwhile, Ronaldo’s former Brazil teammate Ronaldinho has also sent a good luck message to Zlatan.

“My partner @Ibra_official, I wish you all strength,” the Brazilian wrote. “I’m rooting for your recovery. I hope to see you soon enchanting us with your football.”

Classy stuff.

Zlatan's message to his fans

Ronaldo and Ronaldinho's messages came a day after Zlatan posted the following update on Instagram…

"First of all, thank you for all the support and love," United’s current No. 9 wrote. "It's no news I got injured so I will be out of football for a while. I will go through this like everything else and come back even stronger.

"So far, I played with one leg so it shouldn't be any problem. One thing is for sure, I decide when it's time to stop and nothing else. Giving up is not an option. See you soon."
