Although Conor McGregor is pursuing a super fight against Floyd Mayweather, that doesn’t mean his business in the UFC is finished.

In fact, you could argue that the target on his back as lightweight champion is only getting bigger, as the frustration from fighters increases as they want him to end his hiatus from the Octagon, and come back to defend his title.

LONG LINE OF OPPONENTS

The list will only get bigger; Tyron Woodley and Georges St-Pierre have targeted him, while Tony Ferguson has led the line when it comes to wanting the Notorious to either defend the championship or vacate it.

However, the fight most fans want to see is between the Irishman and Nate Diaz – where they can complete their trilogy.

The Stockton native hasn’t been in action since he lost the rematch against McGregor after choking him some months earlier, and it seems like only a third encounter with McGregor will entice him and make him compete in the Octagon again.

Audie Attar has some advice for Diaz, though, as he’s claimed that Diaz should fight Ferguson and the winner should get a fair crack at McGregor.

DIAZ VS. FERGUSON

Attar – who manages both El Cucuy and McGregor – told the MMA Hour: “At one end, you could say that match-up would be great [Khabib vs. Tony], but the history of what has happened – whether it’s due to injury or what have you – has really left some doubt, particularly in Tony.

“He doesn’t want to just go through camps and all that money and energy, then all of a sudden, that fight doesn’t happen again. The Nate Diaz fight interests him. Quite frankly, Nate is sitting on the sidelines and you’ve got to get Conor excited.

“If you want Conor to be excited about you, you’ve got to go in there and fight if you want to fight him in the future.

“Nate – Tony for the interim title, that creates narrative. If Nate really thinks he’s worthy of it, he gets to fight for a title. One of those guys has to come out victorious and both of them want to make Conor excited if they want to fight him.

“If this thing happens with Floyd, you’ve got to get Conor excited to get back in there with you. That’s just the reality of it. From an opportunity standpoint, Nate would be foolish not to consider taking Tony on in an interim title fight.

“Obviously, it would be great if Khabib stepped up and there were some assurances, but to wait until September doesn’t interest Tony. He wants to fight this summer. He wants to get back in there. He’s been left hanging the way he was. He’s just ready to get back in there.”

While The Eagle will be out of action for the coming months because of Ramadan, this does allow UFC to create a huge interim title fight between Ferguson and Diaz, and it only makes sense for the winner to fight McGregor – whenever he decides to come back.
