WWE fans were left bitterly disappointed this year when Shawn Michaels shot down claims that he was coming out of retirement for one more match against AJ Styles.

However, that’s not to say WWE didn’t try their best to lure The Heart Break Kid back into the squared circle, as he revealed that this time it was Vince McMahon himself who came to him; asking if he’d come back for another match.

DREAM MATCH

It wasn’t meant to be, though, as the Royal Rumble teases went to waste as The Phenomenal One lost his WWE Championship to John Cena and then defeated Shane McMahon at WrestleMania 33 in Orlando, while Michaels was part of the kick-off panel.

WWE recently released an episode of Table for 3 on the WWE Network featuring an interesting group of guests; Michaels was joined by Kevin Nash as well as Styles.

As you’d expect, talk quickly turned to their dream match and how it never came to fruition – and you can’t really argue with HBK’s answer.

Styles asked Michaels whether he’d consider the match, and although he claimed he’d love to work with Styles, it wouldn’t make sense from a narrative standpoint as he went out on top before calling it a day.

NO NARRATIVE

He said: “Who wins? From a business standpoint, what do you do?

“Old [menatality] doesn’t do anything but hurt [AJ]…Clearly if you [beat] me, it doesn’t do anything spectacular, and all of that.

“Then it’s like, if you’re gonna come back and do something, why would I do that and lose the last three or four or five [matches] in a row, or whatever it was.

“So, I’m just saying, creatively, that’s sort of anticlimactic as well.”

Styles agreed with Michaels, and admitted that it was a massive risk coming back and damaging what had happened in his final WWE story where he lost to The Undertaker at WrestleMania and then retired – and didn’t come back like others do.

Michaels made more interesting points too which makes you think that a clash with Styles is simply not worth it.

He highlighted that his career started with the broken glass, as he went from a young, rebellious character who didn’t care who he stepped on to get to the top, and ended as a humble veteran who crawled his way up to The Undertaker, and slapped him on the way to being another victim to The Phenom on his way out of WWE.

Michaels knows nothing can top that, so there’s no need to attempt it and damage that story for the sake of one more match – his moment with The Deadman won’t be topped.
