Tottenham needed a hero to step up during Wednesday night's trip to Crystal Palace - and they got one, in Christian Eriksen.

With 12 minutes remaining at Selhurst Park, the 25-year-old beat Wayne Hennessey with a superb low strike from 30 yards out to secure a 1-0 victory.

By beating Sam Allardyce's side, Tottenham closed the gap on league leaders Chelsea to four points, although they still have a lot of work to do.

Just five games remain of the 2016/17 season and with Chelsea still going strong at the top, it's looking unlikely they'll be caught.

But even if Tottenham wind up finishing second, their season will be recognised as a successful one, especially so if they come above Arsenal.

Harry Kane and Dele Alli have stolen much of the plaudits this term but it's important to remember just how important Eriksen has been for Spurs.

Eight goals and 12 assists in the Premier League is a fantastic return from the attacking midfielder and one that makes his £11 million move in 2013 seem like an absolute bargain.

Kane certainly appreciated Eriksen's winner against Palace, with the Tottenham striker lauding him on Twitter after the game.

Much to Tottenham fans' delight, Eriksen signed a four-year extension worth £70,000-per-week last September to suggest he's here to stay.

And they showed just how much they adore the Dane by singing a rather hilarious chant at Selhurst Park on Wednesday, which also made fun of Arsenal's Mesut Ozil.

In the footage below, Tottenham fans chant: "He makes Ozil look s***e... E-rik-sen, sen, sen, he's our number 23," in tune with party classic 'Agadoo' by Black Lace. Check it out.

Very creative. Based on value for money, Tottenham supporters can certainly make the argument they got the better deal with Eriksen.

Whereas the Denmark international cost a meagre £11 million, Arsenal paid £42.5 million for Ozil, who is still yet to really prove himself at the Emirates Stadium.

One man who is a big fan of Eriksen is his former Ajax manager, Frank de Boer, who recently claimed he's good enough to play for Barcelona.

"I think he's really been making a name for himself, at Ajax at first, and then at Tottenham at the highest level," De Boer told Rondo.

"I also think he's ready for a next level. He has everything a Barcelona player needs. He has overview, work ethic, left and right, he's pretty complete."
