Liverpool have had a pretty turbulent time in the transfer market in recent years and like any club, they have plenty of near misses to their name.

After Fernando Torres left for Chelsea in 2011, he was promptly replaced by Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez for fees totalling just under £60 million.

As we all know, one of those deals worked out better than the other.

Despite showing plenty of promise during his Newcastle days and early Liverpool career, Carroll could not fit in at Anfield and like Christian Benteke, the target man would go down as an expensive flop.

For Suarez, though, he was a raging success and scored 69 goals in 110 Premier League game prior to Barcelona splashing £64.98 million following the 2014 World Cup.

The Uruguayan has gone on to score 80 goals in 93 league games for the Catalans and is now regarded as one of the best strikers in world football.

Barca knew his worth even back then and were fully prepared to include then bit-part forward Alexis Sanchez in any deal, so why didn't it happen?

According to former chief executive officer Ian Ayre, it came down to location.

"There was much publicised interest in Alexis Sanchez, as part of the deal which saw Luis go to Barcelona, and that deal was done - the only reason it wasn't was that the player and his wife wanted to live in London.

"We couldn't move the football club to London unfortunately!"

Sanchez would move to the Gunners that same summer for £31.7 million and quickly became the leading man in the red half of north London.

The Chilean has 48 goals in 96 league games for the club despite rarely playing as an out-and-out striker and with his contract coming up in the summer of 2018, the biggest clubs in the world are queuing up for the 28-year-old.

Strangely, Liverpool are currently above Arsenal in the Premier League and six points clear of their rivals having played two games more.

The race for Champions League places is set to go down to the wire, but it would have been interesting to see what kind of side Liverpool could have become with Sanchez taking over from Suarez.
