Manchester United made a number of big signings last year to help with their quest for success under Jose Mourinho.

Paul Pogba returned to Old Trafford for a world record fee of £89 million, and Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic finally made the move to England and has impressed everyone since doing so.

United are currently fifth in the Premier League with five games to go. They're desperate to secure a top-four spot and Champions League football, after missing out on it this season.

Mourinho's side have 64 points, which is one point less than rivals Manchester City, and two behind third place Liverpool. However, both Manchester sides have a game in hand on Jurgen Klopp's team, so they could both leapfrog Liverpool before the end of this term.

Although they haven't quite had the domestic success expected under Mourinho - United have been knockout out of the FA Cup but did win the League Cup, they're still alive in the Europa League.

They play Celta Vigo over two legs in the semi-finals of that competition over the next few weeks, hoping and perhaps expecting to make the final in Sweden.

Winning the Europa League is perhaps United's best chance of securing Champions League football for next year.

As the season draws to a close, individual player and manager awards are being announced. Chelsea's N'Golo Kante won PFA Player of the Year last week, and Tottenham's Dele Alli won the PFA Young Player of the Year award for the second year in a row.

On Friday, United legend turned Sky Sports commentator, Gary Neville, has named the player who's impressed him most at his former club this season.

And it's a pick that will surprise many.

He's overlooked Ibrahimovic, who has made a stunning impact on English football this season. David de Gea and the world's most expensive player, Pogba, have also missed out.

Instead, Neville chose Antonio Valencia as his star man.

The Ecuadorian international has played most of this season out of position in a full-back role, but despite this, Mourinho has named him as one of the best right-backs in Europe.

And Neville certainly agrees.

"He would be my player of the season if I was casting my vote", the 42-year-old said, as per the Mirror.

Valencia has played 27 times in the league this season, scoring once from his defensive position. He's featured in 13 wins and only three losses, keeping 12 clean sheets in the process.

There's no doubt that he's been one of the most important players in Mourinho's side this year, even if he doesn't get the full credit he deserves.
