We’ve seen two thrilling derbies in recent days in El Clasico and Der Klassiker, but last night’s Manchester derby failed to live up to the hype.

Despite both club’s possessing the most-expensive squads in England, Manchester City and Manchester United played out a tedious 0-0 draw that did little to justify the Premier League’s self-appointed reputation as the best league in Europe.

The most exciting part of the match was Marouane Fellaini’s sending off in the 84th minute after he senselessly headbutted Sergio Aguero.

Jose Mourinho claimed the Man City striker overreacted but, although the Argentinian did lean in towards Fellaini, the Belgian can have no arguments about his dismissal.

“If Sergio doesn’t go to the floor for sure it’s not a red card but if Marouane gave him chance to do that…,” Mourinho said at full-time, via The Guardian.

“I don’t know because I didn’t watch. I have just three details. Marouane says it’s a red card because it’s Marouane. He is very disappointed. He feels it is a red card because he is Marouane Fellaini.

“Martin Atkinson told me in his opinion it’s a red card but I saw Aguero in the tunnel but no broken nose no broken head, his face is nice as always, so I’m not so sure. Probably I can guess it is a bit of a red card and a bit of a very experienced, smart Argentinian player.”

Manchester City have released tunnel footage of Thursday’s match, showing behind-the-scenes footage of what happened before, during and after the derby.

Man City missed the chance to leapfrog Liverpool into third place in the table. The Red Devils remain a point behind Pep Guardiola’s side in fifth place, with Arsenal, sixth, hoping for a slip up from both Manchester clubs.

Guardiola: Fellaini's red didn't change the game

Unlike his counterpart, Guardiola refused to be drawn into the row surrounding Fellaini’s red card.

“I’m not here to judge what my opponents decide to do,” he said. “I’m not going to talk about what happened in the last minutes. It didn’t change the game.

“Speak with the referees. I don’t want to talk about the referees. He took a decision so speak with them. I didn’t see it on TV, I was far away.

“I don’t like to see guys sent off and would prefer to see Fellaini stay on the pitch but I’m not going to analyse it.”
