It will be a long time before we see a more memorable image than the one Lionel Messi produced after his last-minute winner against Real Madrid last Sunday. After scoring with the final kick of El Clasico to secure Barcelona’s 3-2 win, the Argentinian ripped off his shirt and held it out for Madrid’s fans to see the name of the man who had just dealt them a serious blow.It was one of the finest images of Messi’s legacy. We will remember the celebration, as well as the goal, for decades to come.Barcelona supporters paid tribute to the celebration in Wednesday’s 7-1 win over Osasuna. After Messi scored in the 12th minute, fans held out their Barcelona shirts just as Messi did three days before at the Santiago Bernabeu. There are already calls for EA Sports to include it in FIFA 18.It was Messi’s 500th goal for Barcelona, too, making the moment all the more special.

Enrique: Messi is the GOAT

Barca boss Luis Enrique heaped praise on the five-time Ballon d’Or winner after the win, which moved the Blaugrana ahead of Madrid in the La Liga title race.

"Messi is decisive even when he is at home eating dinner," Enrique said, per Goal.

"He is the best player in history and I have seen a lot of football and many videos.

"He has scored 500 goals and it is a great pleasure for all the Barca fans to identify with him as one of them.

"Barca have been an incredible for many years but an important part of their history is owed to Messi."

Not everyone enjoyed Messi's celebration

But not everybody enjoyed Messi’s moment of brilliance, or at least his celebration.

Alfredo Relano, a columnist for Spanish newspaper AS, has penned a column in which he called Messi’s celebration, “rather ugly”.

In the piece, Relano labels Messi’s celebration on Sunday and his passionate reaction to his late winner in last year’s fiery win over Valencia at the Mestalla, where he celebrated in front of the home supporters on both occasions, as acts of “provocation”.

“On this occasion we were lucky that nobody threw anything. That spared us,” Relano wrote.

“What I wonder though is what need there is to do that; whether these two acts of provocation were borne out of spontaneity, or if they came from a preconceived intention.

“In either case, there was no postmortem with any criticism from the coach, nor from the club. There was none after Valencia, and there has been none after Madrid.

“But to me, seeing what I saw later, the act does not seem so lovely, but actually rather ugly.

“Uglier even than that finger in Raul's mouth at the Camp Nou, which I criticised at the time, disturbing and unnecessary.”

Gerard Pique hit back on Twitter

Gerard Pique, who has never shied away from expressing his feelings, hit back at AS on Friday.

“Leo has taken them to their limit and they are no longer able to hide it,” Pique wrote on Twitter.

“To them it it more offensive to display a shirt than it is to silence a stadium.”
