Dejan Lovren is a player that splits opinion like so few do in the Premier League, but because he's a defender the discourse is largely left for Liverpool fans.

Some see him as a useful addition to the squad but as a second choice rather than a regular, while others simply want nothing to do with him and would gladly drive him out of Anfield themselves.

However, earlier today he penned a new four-year deal that will see him stand to earn an eye-watering £100,000-per-week, leading many to suggest that he will be a first-team regular for a long time to come.

But in handing him such a lucrative deal, Jurgen Klopp has unwittingly made him the fifth highest paid defender in the entire top flight. Yep, Dejan Lovren is now in the top five earning defenders in the Premier League. Let that sink in.

While his salary is still nothing compared to teammate Philippe Coutinho, who earns double that. He still had a year to run on his current deal but Jurgen Klopp was so keen to keep hold of him he made the move to secure his future now.

And as you can imagine, he's joining some rather illustrious company on that elite list, but who are they?

Now tied in the rankings with Manchester City's John Stones he sits behind just four top class players in his position.

Ahead of him in fourth is Chelsea's David Luiz. The Brazilian only re-signed for the club over the summer in a £30million deal having spent some time with Paris Saint-Germain and out-earns Loven by bringing home £120,000-per-week.

Joint with Luiz is Manchester City's Nicolas Otamendi, who arrived in England from Spanish side Valencia in a £32m deal two years ago. Like Lovren, though, he has earned his fair share of criticism for his hit and miss performances.

HIs captain at City Vincent Kompany is on the same salary, though you would imagine if it weren't for his persistent injuries he would likely be earning slightly more.

But way out in front is Chelsea's John Terry, who takes home a healthy £150,000-per-week. Now that he's moving on over the summer it would be hard to imagine that he'll pick up the same anywhere else in the Premier League, so he may have to reconsider those offers from China if he wants to continue.

Where does Lovren rank in that list in terms of ability? We'll leave that up to you.
