WWE Payback will take place this Sunday at the SAP Center in San Jose, California, and it will be the fifth time in history that the company has put this pay-per-view event on. It looks like it could be a very interesting event with some potential top matches on the show.

Some of the matches confirmed for the show so far are Kevin Owens vs Chris Jericho for the United States championship, Randy Orton vs Bray Wyatt in a House of Horrors match, The Hardy Boyz vs Cesaro and Sheamus for the RAW Tag Team titles, Seth Rollins vs Samoa Joe, and Roman Reigns vs Braun Strowman.

Some stellar matches have taken place at Payback since the first event took place in 2013. Here is a list of five of the best matches to have ever taken place at the pay-per-view.

5. Dean Ambrose vs Chris Jericho - 2016

Dean Ambrose vs Chris Jericho was the second best match on the Payback 2016 pay-per-view. The best match will be mentioned later on, but this is a very close second. This rivalry began after Shane McMahon canceled The Highlight Reel and replaced it with The Ambrose Asylum, much to the annoyance of Jericho.

Their match at Payback was good and included an unusual spot where Ambrose was launched into the timekeeper's area from the announce table by Jericho, but Jericho came out with a bleeding nose somehow. It could have been better if Y2J's Lionsault near the end was properly caught by The Lunatic Fringe. Ambrose eventually came out on top.

4. Seth Rollins vs Dean Ambrose vs Roman Reigns vs Randy Orton - 2015

Seth Rollins defended his WWE World Heavyweight championship against Dean Ambrose, Roman Reigns, and Randy Orton at Payback in 2015. The crowd wasn't very into this match despite the superstars on show, but it was still a good match.

The match included a great spot where the former Shield brothers reunited for a brief moment to triple powerbomb The Viper through the announce table. This was the first time they had performed the move together since their split. Reigns and Ambrose quickly turned on Rollins after.

However, thanks to the help of Kane and J&J Security, Rollins was able to use Triple H's Pedigree on Orton to retain his title.

3. John Cena vs Bray Wyatt - 2014

This match was intense straight from the off as the crowd was into the match straight away which would turn out to be one of the greatest Last Man Standing matches ever.

This match included some great table spots between The Wyatt Family, Cena, and The Usos, who were there to help in the numbers game for The Leader of the Cenation. Every spot looked even more painful as the match went on.

Two tremendous spots, which came near the end of the match, were Wyatt performing a Running Crossbody through the barricade on Cena, and Cena performing an Attitude Adjustment on Wyatt through an equipment box before placing another on top to stop him from standing, resulting in Cena winning.

It's just a shame that Wyatt didn't come out on top in this match, as a win against Cena like this could have propelled him quicker to the main event spotlight than what it has taken him.

2. Kevin Owens vs Sami Zayn - 2016

The best match of last year's Payback pay-per-view has to be the match of Kevin Owens vs Sami Zayn. It truly demonstrated why both superstars should have been signed by the WWE sooner than they were, and why there should be many more clashes between these two in the years to come.

This match was filled with passion from both superstars and the crowd was hooked straight from the bell. It got the crowd back engaged in the show after what had happened in the opening match with Enzo Amore picking up a nasty concussion.

Zayn hit several Blue Thunder Bombs, with Owens kicking out each time following the pin. The Prizefighter followed it up with a Frogsplash while the fans chanted 'Eddie, Eddie, Eddie'. Owens ended up winning the match after hitting a pop-up powerbomb on Zayn, but both men were victorious as they stole the show.

1. The Shield vs Evolution - 2014

A match which many thought would never happen, The Shield took on Evolution in the 2014 edition of Payback in a No Holds Barred Elimination match, in what would turn out to be The Hounds of Justice's last match as a trio for the time being.

Bluetista aside, the match had so many amazing spots, it would be unfair to not list them all, but the two that stand out the most would have to be when Rollins jumped from the jumbotron onto Evolution below, and Triple H hitting Ambrose with his sledgehammer.

The match ended when Reigns delivered a spear to Triple H and pinned him last to give The Shield the clean sweep win in this Elimination match. It would turn out to be the last time we would see The Shield trio fight alongside one another as Rollins would turn on Reigns and Ambrose the following night on RAW.
