New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning is a two-time Super Bowl champion who has likely already earned his way into the NFL Hall of Fame.

But, he’s getting older and his production last year brought up the concept of regression.

While he led the Giants to a 11-5 regular season record and a playoff berth, Manning completed 63.0 percent of his passes for 4,027 yards, 26 touchdowns and 16 interceptions for a rating of 86.0.

The previous year, he threw for 4,436 yards with 35 touchdowns and 14 interceptions for a rating of 93.6.

At this point, heading into the 2017 season and perhaps beyond, his status as the starting quarterback in New York is safe, but the Giants may have selected his eventual successor in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft on Friday.

In a shocking pick, the Giants took Davis Webb from the University of California with the 87th overall selection.

“We hope Eli continues to play at a high level and [Webb] can develop,’’ general manager Jerry Reese told the New York Post.

It’s worth noting that the Giants previously signed quarterback Geno Smith this offseason, thus creating the realistic possibility that Webb will fill a third-string role for the entire 2017 campaign, as he learns under the guidance of Manning and the coaching staff.

The 6’5”, 230-pound Webb began his college career at Texas Tech but then transferred to Cal, where he threw 37 touchdown passes in 2016.

“We thought he had the best arm in the draft this year, gifted arm,’’ Reese told the Post.

But, Reese made something very clear.

“Let me get this straight guys,’’ Reese said. “We hope Eli plays for a long time. Eli is our quarterback. We do know he’s not going to play forever.’’

As for a timetable for Webb? Reese surprisingly gave an insight into the team’s expectations and plans.

“Obviously we’d like him to have two years to be the caddie,’’ he said.

Via Newsday, Reese also explained that he informed Eli about the selection of Webb prior to drafting him.

“We didn’t have any conversation with Eli before we drafted, but we draft a quarterback and we are going to let our quarterback know that we are drafting a quarterback, of course,” Reese said. “Eli understands the process. Eli is a very smart guy and he understands the process. He knows that he is not going to play forever. He knows that it is our job to prepare for when he has finished his career here, so he understands that. It is nothing that we had to talk to him about.”

“Eli has however much time that he has left, two or three years left in his contract [he has three] or however long he plays,” Reese noted. “We think that this guy [Webb] has a high ceiling that can come in here and develop behind him and learn the pro game and challenge and compete and create competition at the quarterback position.”

After 13 seasons of an unquestioned starter under center, it appears as though that two years from now, the Giants will have an old fashioned quarterback battle on their hands if all goes to plan.
