Lionel Messi produced one of the most iconic images in the history of El Clasico last weekend after he scored that winner in the 92nd minute. The Argentinian ripped his shirt off and held it in front of the Real Madrid supporters so they could see the name of the man who had just beaten their team. The entire sequence was memorable. It simply had to be Messi who struck the winner, and it was a fitting way to score his 500th Barcelona goal.In Jamie Carragher’s eyes, Messi’s brace in Barca’s 3-2 win reaffirmed his status as the greatest club player of all-time.“There could not have been a more dramatically appropriate way to score his 500th club goal than with the last kick of last week's Clasico, his strike blowing the race for La Liga wide open and leaving his bitter rival Cristiano Ronaldo devastated,” Carragher wrote in his Daily Mail column.“I’ve said it before but I will say it again: he is the greatest club player of all time. Let's enjoy him while we can.”

Messi's celebration didn't satisfy everyone

But Messi’s celebration didn’t please everyone. Alfredo Relano, a columnist for Spanish newspaper AS, called it unnecessary and “ugly”.

“On this occasion we were lucky that nobody threw anything. That spared us,” Relano wrote.

The journalist also included Messi’s celebration in last year’s win over Valencia at the Mestalla, where he posed in front of the home supporters, as an act of “provocation”.

Relano continued: “What I wonder though is what need there is to do that; whether these two acts of provocation were borne out of spontaneity, or if they came from a preconceived intention.

“But to me, seeing what I saw later, the act does not seem so lovely, but actually rather ugly.”

Pique responded to the article

The reason Relano’s article gained some recognition is due to Gerard Pique’s response on Twitter.

“Leo has taken them to their limit and they are no longer able to hide it,” Pique wrote on Twitter.

“To them it is more offensive to display a shirt than it is to silence a stadium.”

Espanyol's dig at Messi

Pique, and Messi, will be eager to defeat Espanyol this evening after the club took a jibe at the Argentinian on Twitter on Friday.

Barca’s local rivals posted a picture of someone holding an Espanyol shirt, with the badge clear to see, in a subtle reference to Messi’s celebration against Barcelona.

They added the caption: “Remember what is important."

The message is clear to see. While Messi showed off his name, Espanyol are implying that the team is more important than the individual.

Espanyol had better hope Messi doesn’t see the tweet before tonight’s kick-off. Madrid will tell them just how devastating a riled Leo Messi can be.
