Back in December, Manchester City were slammed by football fans for their over-the-top tribute to Ilkay Gundogan after he suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury.
To show their support for the German midfielder, City's players wore back-to-front shirts with 'Gundogan 8' printed on the back as they walked out to face Arsenal.
Even Gundogan appeared to suggest the gesture was too much when he thanks his teammates on Twitter but added: "Don't worry, I'm still alive."
Yaya Toure tried to defend the decision but the damage had already been done.
"We were all affected by what happened to Ilkay and he's a massive player for us," the Ivorian said. "We came in with these shirts, we saw him at the training ground and he was very sad.
"But I think he's a guy who is positive and will come back quickly to help the team. We wore the shirts because we wanted to inspire him. We wanted to win this game for him."
City have hopefully learned their lesson and will find a more subtle way to pay tribute in the future, yet their mistake didn't stop Manchester United from doing the exact same last weekend.
Jose Mourinho lost both Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcos Rojo to ligament damage in the Europe League recently, so United's players decided to show their support against Burnley.
And like City, they were mocked on social media. The Red Devils wore training tops with 'Ibrahimovic' or 'Rojo' printed on the back during their warm-up at Turf Moor (see below).
Ibrahimovic and Rojo's absence didn't stop United from cruising to a 2-0 victory, but Luke Shaw has now revealed whose idea it was to emblazon the pair's names on their training tops.
Rather shockingly, it was actually Mourinho who suggested the gesture to his players, who probably weren't given much choice.
"I think it was the manager's idea and it was a nice touch," Shaw told MUTV. "I know Marcos and Ibra will appreciate it.
"Obviously I know what they are going through now, it is going to be a long and hard road, but you couldn't have two stronger players in Marcos and Ibra.
"You have seen Zlatan's post on Instagram as well. He is very positive about his return and we all hope they fight back quickly, strongly and come back even better. I am sure they will."
Mourinho isn't one to care about what people think of him, but he must have known his players would be mocked for their tribute to Ibrahimovic and Rojo.
