One of the yearly traditions in the NFL Draft is crowning Mr. Irrelevant — the player who is taken with the 253rd and final pick in the draft.

This year, quarterback Chad Kelly out of Ole Miss was selected by the Denver Broncos with the final pick in the 2017 Draft.

But, unlike most years, this year’s Mr. Irrelevant is very well-known.

First, he’s the nephew of NFL legend Jim Kelly.

Secondly, when healthy, he was one of the best quarterbacks in college football for Ole Miss over the past two seasons. In fact, through 22 career games, he threw for 6,850 yards, 50 touchdowns and 21 interceptions for the Rebels, also had 15 rushing scores and impressively had some of his best performances against the best competition in the SEC.

In fact, in 2015, he led his team to wins against Alabama, Auburn University and Louisiana State University.

But, he had several off-field incidents in college, was dismissed early in his college career at Clemson University and even recently had his NFL Scouting Combine invitation rescinded.

Add that to the fact that he tore his ACL and meniscus in November, and it was clear that his draft stock would plummet.

But, legendary NFL great John Elway is the executive vice president of football operations and general manager for the Broncos and he knows talent when he sees it.

Elway also happened to be drafted in 1983, the same year as Jim Kelly. Before selecting Chad, Elway gave his uncle a call to discuss whether or not he can trust the embattled young quarterback.

"I called his uncle, and he said, 'He's a good kid,'" Elway said via ESPN. "I said, 'OK, that's all I need.' I trust Jim with that. Obviously, there's been some history there, but we felt comfortable. Chad understands what he's been through and is ready to take this step and realizes the step that he's taken is different than when he was in college. We're full of confidence that Chad's going to be able to come up here and understand the situation he's in.’’

"He's a competitor, and that's what we're really excited about," Elway explained. "He makes a lot of plays."

First-year Broncos coach Vance Joseph called Kelly "my favorite quarterback in the draft.”

"He's made some childish mistakes in the past, but he's learned from that,'' Joseph said. "I'm comfortable with it.’'

"I'm so thankful," the newly-drafted Kelly said after his name was called. "I'm ready to get started as soon as possible.’’

He joins Denver’s Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch in the Broncos depth chart at quarterback. While it’s presumed that Siemien will begin the year as the starter with Lynch backing him up, a lot can happen in terms of injuries or regression and Mr. Irrelevant might end up being very relevant in the next few years in the Mile High city.
