Following his red card against Manchester City on Thursday night, Marouane Fellaini needed to be ushered off the pitch by his concerned Manchester United teammates to prevent him from doing something he would later regret.

The Belgian midfielder was incensed with Sergio Aguero because of the theatrical manner the City striker hit the deck after they squared up.

However, by putting his head towards the Argentina international, referee Martin Atkinson was left with no choice but to issue Fellaini with a straight red card for violent conduct.

"I didn't watch it on TV. I spoke with Marouane and he is very disappointed, he feels it is a red card because he is Marouane Fellaini," Jose Mourinho told Sky Sports, per Goal, after the match.

"I spoke with Martin who said in his opinion it was a red card. I didn't watch but I can guess it is a bit of a red card and a bit of a very smart, very experienced Argentine player."

Eyewitness reveals how Fellaini really reacted

Man City released tunnel cam footage on Friday and while it showed Fellaini looking unhappy, it didn’t feature any footage of him kicking off.

But according to an eyewitness inside the tunnel, per the Mirror, the 29-year-old went crazy once the cameras were off him.

“Fellaini was in tears and stamping his feet,” the eyewitness has revealed.

“He was screaming ‘I want to know why, I want to know why’ as he stormed towards the referee’s dressing room. He was fortunate that some stewards managed to restrain him before teammates ushered him back into United’s dressing room.”

Fellaini let himself - and his teammates - down

The truth is, Fellaini should have acted far smarter than he did.

He committed two fouls on Aguero within the space of 30 seconds and then embarrassed himself by head-butting - well, sort of - the City striker.

If Aguero acted smart, in the words of Mourinho, then Fellaini’s reaction was foolish and naive.
