Manchester United haven’t exactly set the world alight at Old Trafford this season, but to say they were slow out the blocks against Swansea City would be putting it mildly.

Despite having put table-topping Chelsea to the sword just two weeks ago, the Red Devils lacked both motivation and initiative. Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba seemed sorely missed.

Nevertheless, this is a United side that hasn’t lost a league fixture since October and the Swans have been left kicking themselves. After all, Jose Mourinho’s men managed to smuggle a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The goal came virtue of Wayne Rooney and the penalty spot – just the Englishman’s sixth strike of the season. However, he has a lot to thank Marcus Rashford for.

His compatriot was the man deemed to have been fouled with Lukasz Fabianski dashing out from goal after a through ball from Jesse Lingard.

With Rashford going to ground, the penalty was eventually awarded after great deliberation from referee Neil Swarbrick. The delay suggested a degree of doubt, yet the input of his assistants saw the spot kick awarded.

Upon review, however, it may in fact be a mistake from the officials and the Swans can count themselves bitterly unlucky.

Replays seem to show that Rashford is falling before Fabianski extends his arm, never mind when he commits to lunging in. The 19-year-old does receive a knock, but only after he sends himself hurtling towards the ground.

While it’s far from the clearest cut dive you’ll ever see, it’s certainly contentious. It’s hard to imagine that, given the privilege of video refereeing, that United would have been so fortuitous.

Twitter seems to agree with United fans counting themselves lucky, Swans supporters tearing their hair out and neutrals looking on bemused.

At the time of writing, United maintain their 1-0 lead and Swansea look to fall further behind in the race to avoid relegation.

The away side produced more attempts, more shots on targets and more possession in the first half but one controversial dive could send them plunging back to the Championship. Ouch.
