Torquay captain Chris Hargreaves has signed a new one-year contract with the League Two new-boys.

The 37-year-old midfielder helped his side gain promotion back into the Football League following the Gulls' Conference play-off final victory over Cambridge.

He told the club's official website: "There was only one club I wanted to sign for and it was just a matter of when."

He added: "There were a couple of things to sort out but it was nothing that was going to be a deal breaker so it wasn't done quite as soon as I would have hoped. I'm delighted to have signed a new contract.

"If we hadn't gone up I think things would have been different for many players and the club as a whole. I kept saying that there was no other option but to go up and it certainly felt that way!"

On whether it would be his final season as a player, he added: "I don't know, let's see how I play! It's always performance related. If I didn't think I could do the job I would hold my hand up but having played more games than anyone else last season I think it is worth giving it another shot."
