When it comes to team selection and organising his squad, Pep Guardiola is as brutal in his methods as he is bizarre.

With Kevin de Bruyne slotting into left wing back and Sergio Aguero frequenting the bench, there’s ample evidence. Moreover, his treatment of Joe Hart in the summer was another fine example of his insatiable self-belief in his methods.

Simply put, Hart’s Manchester City career seems dead in the water and the Citizens aren’t keen to welcome him back. In fact, Guardiola could even give the green light to a sensational move to Manchester United.

Sudden exile

You’d be hard pressed to argue that Hart isn’t one of the best ‘keepers in Europe, let’s be honest here.

The Englishman had been pretty comfortable as City’s number one shot stopper for no less than six years. He certainly had his blips, but ultimately proved a reliable constant in an ever-evolving side.

It’s in part because of this that he has two Premier League titles, two League Cups and an FA Cup to show for his time at the Etihad Stadium.

Nevertheless, it seems that Guardiola has brought the 30-year-old’s time with the Citizens to an abrupt end. Loaning Hart out to Torino was bold in itself but the Spaniard could be seeking a more permanent solution in the summer.

He was handed his 348th appearance for the club in a Champions League qualifier before departing for Italy and it might very well prove his last.

Since that final cameo, goalkeeping has proven quite the issue for City. Claudio Bravo is slowly adapting to Premier League football yet endured a nightmarish start with mistakes galore on English soil.

Willy Caballero proves a sound deputy and penalty saving seems to be his party trick, but it’s questionable as to whether he could match Hart.

Meanwhile, Hart has experienced a mixed season in Italy with errors forced by Torino’s leaky defence. That being said, his stock certainly hasn’t plummeted and it seems only Guardiola would block a swift return.

Old Trafford?

With Torino unable to fund the permanent purchase of the 30-year-old and Guardiola keen to sell, Hart looks almost certain to be plying his trade elsewhere next season. Astonishingly, his destination could prove Manchester United.

According to the Mirror, City would be willing to sell Hart to their bitter rivals if they met their valuation of £30 million. For some sort of perspective, that would make the Englishman the second most expensive goalkeeper of all time.

Only Gianluigi Buffon’s switch from Parma to Juventus in 2001 can serve to overwhelm the proposed fee.

Moreover, a source at the club is keen to express the club’s openness as regards a move, stating: “Nothing will be ruled out with regard to Joe.

“But we know there will be lots of interest from both home and abroad and we won’t accept anything less than the true market value.”

Nevertheless, it would prove nothing short of historic if Hart were to make the switch from City to United. After all, goalkeeper Tony Cotton was the last player to do so and that was no less than 21 years ago.

Therefore, it’s clear that City aren’t discriminating against clubs as concerns their transfer plans for Hart. As long as the team produces £30 million then they’re willing to cash in and give Bravo a few extra training sessions.

Flogging the Englishman will always seem bizarre but for a near-world record fee for a goalkeeper, would you really blame Pep?
