Following his victory alongside Nikki Bella at WrestleMania 33, John Cena went on his expected hiatus and we didn’t receive many indications as to what his returning plans could feature.

As of this writing, he isn’t advertised for any upcoming events and it was even speculated that we may have to wait until Survivor Series to witness his return as his projects outside of WWE continue to pile up.

RETURN

While that’s perfect for his post-WWE career, it’s clear that Cena is still a vital asset to WWE and can still offer a lot to SmackDown LIVE, even if they’re proving to be stiff competition to Monday Night RAW without having him around.

It was speculated this week that Cena could be featured in a massive WrestleMania 34 encounter against Shinsuke Nakamura, with AJ Styles also reportedly in the frame to battle the King of Strong Style.

Let’s take a step back, though, as that is a long way away to even consider it a concrete plan, but The Inquisitr has now reported that Cena could be back in action relatively soon and the outcome of the rumoured match could provide us with a better indication as to who he could feud with when he returns.

The source is claiming that Cena will compete at the SmackDown-exclusive Money in the Bank event and rather than go up against a particular opponent, he’ll actually be challenging for the briefcase along with other guys on the roster.

That’s probably the best route to go down, as a Money in the Bank ladder match sells itself and WWE wouldn’t need to rush Cena in any storylines and have him compete in a below-par match.

MONEY IN THE BANK

It probably does mean that he won’t win, but it still gives the company the chance to add another big-name to the match which will hopefully get more people tuning in to see how Cena fares in his return match, even if it means he goes back on his hiatus after it.

The only negative about this happening is that it’s clear Cena could be taking the spot of another deserving star, and you can be sure fans will let WWE hear it if that’s the case – somebody will have to miss out to accommodate him.

Based on the latest odds, it looks as if Baron Corbin will be the lucky individual that captures the briefcase this year.

It’s been well-documented in recent months that WWE officials are high on him and a feud with current champion Randy Orton is reportedly in the works also.

Perhaps this is the way WWE will insert The Lone Wolf into the title picture.
