Stern John has made a surprise return to Southampton and wants to earn a new contract at St Mary's.

The Trinidad & Tobago striker, 32, was loaned out to Bristol City last season as one of cash-strapped Saints' higher earners, and is now out of contract and without a club.

But John has linked up with his former team-mates for pre-season training in a bid to build up his fitness and secure a new deal should the proposed takeover of the club be completed in the near future.

"He needs to work on his fitness and knows he would have to settle for a lot less if we were in a position to offer him any sort of contract in League One," said Wotte.

"That is not something we are able to do until any takeover has been agreed but we are doing everything we can to make sure we are as prepared as possible. We are hoping to play him in some of the friendlies coming up and we will see how things work out."

Wotte has also handed a trial to 28-year-old Nigerian-born striker Ode Thompson.
