Walsall have signed Matt Richards after a successful trial spell with the midlands outfit.

The versatile 24-year-old started his career at Ipswich, spending the majority of the 2007/08 season and the first half of last term on loan at Brighton, before being released by the Tractor Boys earlier this summer.

Richards, a left-sided midfielder who can also play in central midfield or at left-back, linked up with the Saddlers towards the end of July and impressed enough to earn a deal.

Manager Chris Hutchings said: "Matt has done well during his time with us. He has a decent pedigree and can play in a number of positions, which is important.

"He has settled in well and I'm looking forward to working with him in the coming weeks and months."

Richards could now make his competitive debut for the Saddlers this weekend, incidentally against Brighton.
