Murty becomes a Saint

Southampton have signed former Reading captain Graeme Murty following a successful trial at St Mary's.

The 34-year-old was released by the Royals this summer despite being a key part of their defence over an 11-year stint with the club.

Murty told the club's official website: "I'm delighted to have tied up a move to Southampton and cannot wait to get started."

He added: "It is a challenge that lies ahead of us this season but the right infrastructure is in place for the club to regain its Championship status and then move forward from there.

"I've worked with the manager (Alan Pardew) before and have a great respect for him.

"I know what he's about and I know exactly what he'll expect from me in the forthcoming campaign."
