Shrewsbury claimed a 3-1 victory over promoted Burton in Coca-Cola League Two.
Jake Robinson got them going with a 10th-minute opener and Dave Hibbert added a second before Greg Pearson got Burton off the mark with 28 minutes left. Joss Labadie then sealed the points for Shrewsbury.
Injury-hit Bournemouth also got their season off to a fine start with a stunning 3-0 win at fancied Bury.
Brett Pitman opened the scoring with a crisp long-range strike before club legend Steve Fletcher headed a second before the break. Mark Molesley's drive sealed the win five minutes after the interval.
Cheltenham came from behind to secure a hard-fought 2-1 win over Grimsby. Barry Conlon nudged Grimsby ahead from close range 10 minutes before the break, only for Lee Ridley to draw Cheltenham level with a long-range drive 10 minutes into the second-half.
Veteran Barry Hayles completed the comeback with a smart finish in the 68th minute.
Paul Benson struck 16 minutes from time to seal an opening-day success for Dagenham at Crewe. Jon Nurse's 35-yard strike powered them ahead two minutes before the break, only for Byron Moore to bring Crewe level on 72 minutes, but Benson quickly prodded home Solomon Taiwo's cross to secure a 2-1 win.
Scott Rendell got Torquay off to a dream start with a goal 15 minutes into their Football League return to send them on their way to a 2-0 victory over Chesterfield.
Rendell converted Danny Stevens' pass to edge Torquay ahead before Lee Mansell's header sealed the win 20 minutes from time.h
Elsewhere, Northampton were held to a goaless draw at home by Macclesfield, who saw with Colin Daniel and Paul Bolland both hit the bar. Port Vale were fortunate to earn a 1-1 draw with Rochdale as Marc Richards netted a controversial penalty.
