Varney still has Rams future - Clough

Derby manager Nigel Clough insists Luke Varney still has a future at Pride Park despite farming the striker out to Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday on loan until January.

The former Crewe and Charlton marksman has returned to Hillsborough having scored two goals in four appearances in a loan spell with Brian Laws' side last season.

"Luke needs to be playing games and clearly he will get a better opportunity at Sheffield Wednesday at this moment in time," Clough told the club's official website.

"He went there last season and did well, so it is no surprise they would like to take him back.

"There is no faulting Luke's attitude and he is a great lad but at this moment in time the change of scenery might do him good and get him that extra sharpness he needs.

"We will be watching him closely while he is out on loan; by no means is he completely out of the picture here."
