Simona Halep is unhappy with the manner of her defeat to Johanna Konta at Wimbledon yesterday, with the Romanian hinting at two incidents that especially annoyed her at Centre Court.

The first incident is perhaps the most obvious cause of Halep’s ire; during match point a fan screamed, distracting the 25-year-old as she was preparing to hit a forehand which ended up in the net, costing her a place in the semi-finals.

Halep believed that the point should have been replayed, and to be fair, she does have a point. It is not uncommon that the umpire calls for a replayed point if there has been inference from the crowd.

“I thought he’s going to repeat the point, I think it’s normal to repeat the point when someone is screaming like that.

“He said, “We cannot replay. I cannot change anything.” So why I should fight?” said the 25-year-old.

Though, that incident aside, Halep was complementary of the Centre Court crowd, who the Romanian praised for the atmosphere they created in the stadium.

“[They were] very nice and very fair.

“Just the last point, I was surprised that that lady was screaming.

“But the rest was nice atmosphere. I appreciated it.”

At least until the screaming fan on match point of course.

The second incident concerned the actions of Jo Konta in the intermittent period between the second and third sets.

The 25-year-old Romanian thinks that the British number one took too long to change her attire, although there are no rules regarding the length of time a player can take before they begin a set.

Halep believes that the tennis authorities should place a time limit for breaks in-between sets.

“I don’t believe that were only four minutes.

“But she does that all the time. I cannot change because there is no rule. I understood from the umpire.”

Whatever her gripes about the time it took Konta to get back on court for the third set, Halep was full of praise for the quality of tennis on display.

“I think was great tennis,” Halep told the BBC following the match.

“Both of us played a good level.

“I was very close, again. In the tiebreak maybe I could serve better and stronger a little bit.

“Then in the third set, the serve game that I lost was a little bit tough to still believe that I can break her because she was serving pretty well.

“I think everything was okay. Many positives from this match. And she played really well, so she deserves to win.”

Classy there by Halep.

Jo Konta was also full of praise for the Centre Court crowd and said that getting to the semi-finals at a Grand Slam was especially special because it was in front of her home fans.

“I think it makes it more special because it is home” Said the 26-year-old.

“I do get that home support, which I don’t get anywhere else. In that sense, I guess it makes it that much sweeter.”

Australian born Jo Konta will play her semi-final match against American Venus Williams tomorrow at 11:30.
