The first press conference between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather certainly didn’t disappoint.

No matter what you think of the crazy match-up, you simply can’t argue that it’s intriguing to say the least.

And the hype began on Tuesday night when Mayweather and McGregor kicked off their world tour at the Staples Centre in front of 11,000 fans ahead of next month’s fight.

It didn’t take long for the pair to start the mind games.

The UFC champion made an outlandish prediction by suggesting he would knock Mayweather out inside four rounds.

The trash talk started

"He's in a tracksuit, he can't even afford a suit anymore! He is f*****.  I'm going to knock him out inside four rounds, mark my words," McGregor taunted.

"I'm just enjoying myself. That's it. He will be unconscious in four rounds. He's never experienced someone like me. I don't fear him.

"This is a limited set of rules that makes this half a fight, a quarter of a fight. If this was a true fight, it wouldn't even take one round."

But Mayweather wasn’t having any of it.

He hit back by saying: "I don't give a f*** if we do this in the Octagon. I'm going to knock this b**** out."

The special clothing

But it wasn’t necessarily the words that made the headlines on the night.

McGregor turned up with a special suit that had the words “f**k you” embroidered all over it.

And an item of clothing Mayweather was wearing was also being talked about.

Part of the American’s tracksuit was a cap with the number 48 on it.

Mayweather’s boxing record is, of course, 49-0 so why was he wearing number 48?

Mayweather explains the '48' cap

Well, luckily for us, Yahoo journalist Kevin Iole asked that very question after the press conference.

"Number 48 was the biggest fight in Boxing history. This was iconic, but this was a $300 million dollar fight for me and of course, one of my favourite shows is first 48,” Mayweather explained.

Fight number 48 for Mayweather was his bout againt Manny Pacquiao in 2015.

But when asked whether he will soon be wearing a ’50’ cap, considering this fight with McGregor is set to be more lucrative that the Pacquiao one, he said: "50 right now, is on the pace of breaking Mayweather-Pacquiao. So we have to keep the 48 over here and put the 50 over here and put the line down the middle."

So that explains the number 48.
