Impact Wrestling could've played host to the best commentating team in professional wrestling today, but they barely missed the boat.

WWE Hall Of Famer Jerry "The King" Lawler has had his fair share of issues with the company, the most notable dating back to 2001. Lawler signed with the WWE back in 1992 where he served as an in-ring talent and commentator throughout the years. Unfortunately Lawler and the company had a falling out when his then-wife, Stacy "The Kat" Carter, was released by WWE. As a result, Lawler walked out on the company in protest.

Just a year later, Lawler made his return to the company on an episode of Monday Night RAW and remained there for 13 years, with the majority of his run being served as a commentator while also being used in a few in-ring feuds as well.

Lawler was then moved over to SmackDown in 2015, where he has remained to this day, however, he is no longer a regular part of the weekly commentary team. Lawler typically makes sporadic appearances on WWE TV on pre and post shows and special events. He now competes on the independent circuit from time to time, and also hosts his own podcast, Dinner With The King.

On the latest episode of his show, Lawler dedicated the episode to discussing his departure in 2001 after his wife was fired. During the episode, King revealed that once the WWE pulled him off TV on a regular basis Impact Wrestling attempted to contact him to be a part of their regular commentating team.

Lawler also speculated that both Impact and his longtime WWE broadcast partner, Jim Ross, wanted the pair to reunite on Impact TV (quotes via WrestleZone):

“During that time, I did get a call from Jeff Jarrett just saying, ‘Hey, we [TNA] were just wondering if you re-signed with the WWE or not?’ It was one of those things that I got right back to him and said I did re-sign with them [WWE].

"[On possibly bringing King and J.R. together in TNA] Without a doubt, I’m sure that’s what was in their minds and it was possibly in the mind of JR’s as well.”
