Arsenal kicked off their pre-season campaign with a 2-0 victory over Sydney at the ANZ Stadium on Thursday. The Gunners took the lead in the fourth minute when Per Mertesacker, the experienced German defender who will become the club’s academy manager next season, produced an acrobatic finish from close range.Arsene Wenger then made a string of changes midway through the second half and, in the process, handed a debut to the club’s record signing Alexandre Lacazette. The French striker, who completed his £52 million move from Lyon last week, took just 15 minutes to open his account for his new employers.Lacazette tapped home Alex Iwobi’s right-wing cross to wrap up a comfortable win for the north London outfit.

But what else did Lacazette do during the 22 minutes he was on the pitch?

A video of the forward’s individual highlights has been uploaded to YouTube and you can watch it below…

Why was Lacazette playing so deep?

The first thing you’ll notice is how deep Lacazette was playing.

Instead of playing off the shoulder of the last defender - as he’s done throughout his entire career - it appeared that Lacazette had been deployed as an attacking midfielder.

Perhaps Wenger wanted to ensure Lacazette saw as much of the ball as possible on his first appearance for the club.

If that was the plan, then it had the desired effect. Lacazette had just over 20 minutes to impress but looked bright, sharp and linked up well with his new teammates.

His goal capped off an extremely encouraging performance.
